This has been a great start to third grade! I am loving getting to know your wonderful children! We are getting used to the new year, new procedures, and new friends, and they are all adjusting beautifully! Your kids are making maps of South Carolina and they are turning out great! They learned to critique each other to make their maps better, but to still be kind and helpful in the process. They are writing beautiful small moment true stories about their lives and it gives me great insight into their characters. In math, we are reviewing place value and addition and subtraction concepts and playing some fun games to do so (as you can see in the pictures). Finally, during our reading time we have been learning what a third grade reading workshop looks like and what readers do. Your children are already working hard in third grade and I am so proud of them! Enjoy your long weekend!

When we learned fractions, it helped us learn how to do equivalent fractions when we did the Lucky Charms on St. Patrick's Day. We did the centers when we go around and do all the stuff like putting fractions together to make a whole. On the left they are making fractions and on the right we are cutting the fractions.
We have been learning about World War II. In science we have been making instruments to help us learn about sound and pitch.
This week we've been working on the Civil War and we learned that some people thought the battle was kind of interesting so they would make a picnic and sit on their rooftop and watch it. We also have been learning in the Civil War that many people in the south allowed slavery and many in the north did not. It's really interesting because just hearing about it's the most bloodiest war of all but in the first battle at Fort Sumter only one horse got killed. We also learned that in the Civil War it was kind of difficult because a lot of people and slaves weren't being treated fair.
In math we learned how to count by 3s, 6s, and 9s. The most difficult part about it was kinda the 9s because some people knew how to count by 9s and some people didn't. We started also in math multiplying like adding up 10 5 times and that would give you 50 which is the same as 10 x 5=50.
We are making new writing this week. It's when we really get to think about what happens in our minds and we just write a story about what happens. We also learned a new math game this week: Go Collecting. It's kind of like Go Fish. In social studies we are learning about the Native Americans, the explorers, and how slavery was like for people. We got our pictures taken this week.
We've been learning about the explorers that came to the New World. We finished our masks about the three different Native American tribes. We worked on our lengths today. We measured our feet and we found out that nobody's foot is a foot. We are going to do a book review on our author study books. In writing we worked on drafting our stories.
For math we've been playing Capture 5, Close to 100, and Make a Dollar. Some of them are challenging and very fun! In writing we've been working on new stories and small moments. In social studies we had a big social studies test and lots of students got lots right and a little bit of the students will get to try again on Friday. We've done tableaus for Blue Ridge, Piedmont, Sandhills, Inner Coastal Plain, Outer Coastal Plain and Coastal Zone. See if you can guess which picture is which region! We've been working on Author Study on picture books in reading and there are a lot of students remembering their author's name!
We have been working hard in math, social studies, homework, and in our specials. We've been getting lots of compliments this week! We've learned how to be writers, readers, and mathematicians. We've been working on writing in our writer's notebook. We've started reading in groups and learning about each other. We've learned games in math and being mathematicians in the games. We've learned about different parts in our state. It's been a lovely week this week.
This week we have been working on writing pieces and it's something important that's happened to us. We have been working on controlling our body, voice, and mind. We have been working on our maps of South Carolina. We have gotten a lot of compliments. We've been working on what readers do. In math we have learned about sticker station. We are using stories about Sticker Station and people go there and they buy certain numbers of stickers. We have had a lot of fun in specials. And we're having a great day in third grade!
